Today
marks the 50th anniversary of the break-in at the Watergate Hotel, a
bit of political chicanery that touched off what was then the greatest scandal
in American history. Dwarfing, Credit
Mobilier, Teapot Dome, and Iran-Contra, Nixon’s vindictiveness and
paranoia transformed what he, himself, called a ‘third-rate burglary’ into
multiple charges of obstruction of justice and other offenses. Facing impeachment and certain conviction in
the Senate, Nixon made a quick exit and was not heard much from
thereafter.
But the
stench of Richard Shithouse Nixon still lingers in the forum. Nixon was not only an unsavory human being
but, like our Caesar Disgustus, proved a veritable scum magnet attracting the
dregs and mayhem artists from every dark corner of American Life. It was Richard Shithouse Nixon who brought to
Washington the likes of Roger Stone and Paul Manafort, began the schooling of
the rat-bastard Lee Atwater and, after soiling the Oval Office, tutored a young
Newt Gingrich from his hide-out at San Clemente.
Nixon, of
course, finally had the decency to shake his mortal coil back in 1994. But the stench still lingers. Malcomb Nance in his book They Want to
Kill Americans mentions Stone in passing. Not only was he and Manafort
central characters in the Russian interference in the 2016 elections—it was
Stone and his connections with WikiLeaks and Manafort in the effort to blame
the business on Ukraine—but Stone, it appears, is a bona fide member of the
Proud Boys. No sooner was Roger given a
‘get out of jail free’ card and he was, like his hero after getting exhonerated
by Bill Barr in the Russian scandal, immediately back in the soup. Like any good conservative, they cannot be
taught.
And now
we find Roger, the villain in every piece, meeting with the Proud Boys while
communicating with the ‘War Room’ at the Willard Hotel before and during the
insurrection.
It’s been
50 years now and the stench still fills the nostrils. How long will it take to irradicate the
malodorous Disgustus and his minions?
